Open questions are a great way to get qualitative feedback from respondents. An Open question allows respondents to give a full, meaningful response without the possible constraint of pre-determined responses. Open questions can be used to capture:
- Text
- Essay
- Other information such as email, phone, url, etc.
Programming Steps
From the New Question dropdown menu, select Open.

Next, enter and update the following:
- Question text and a label, if desired (labels are not shown to respondents but can be used for back-end reporting).
- Select checkbox if you want to make the question required (all have to answer it to go to the next survey screen).
Other options include:
- Select checkbox Matrix if desired. This option allows for multiple columns of fields.
- Choose number of Fields (each will become its own text box).
- Choose Type of Open question (text, essay, email, phone number, url, date, date with time, time). Text and essay are the most commonly used types.
- Select clip icon to attach an image or video, if desired.

Click FINISHED to save the question.
