Community engagement is especially important when you do not have regular or frequent research activities to run on your community. But even if you have a full research roadmap with many activities for your members, it is still a good idea to add some fun activities to help show appreciation and to give back.
A number of articles outline specific engagement tools (see Continue Reading below), but the easiest engagement tool is a one or two question "quick poll."
Ask about something unrelated to the community topics, such as the Superbowl, summer vacation, Thanksgiving, etc., and make sure the member experience is fun and that the community stays top of mind. These activities do not need to have any research value (but they can, of course). Either way, they should be quick and easy to get people in the community involved at a minimum base level.
A few other engagement idea are:
- Link to content outside the community, such as the brand’s online tools, blog, twitter feed, Facebook page, etc.
- Give member-only special previews of new product lines, behind-the-scenes info, brand announcements
- Have brand team host a live chat where members can ask them questions
- Post short recurring how-to articles, tips and tricks (community topic specific)
- Feature monthly "expert" article or post (community topic specific)
- Hold photo contests
- Post video welcome or thank you from client team member posted on homepage
- Request other community members to comment on specific ideas that client may be interested in exploring
- Create a New Member Corner or place for new members to chat with one another and ask questions
